Vladimir Khavkin (the name he was known by in Russia) was a son of a Jewish schoolmaster, Aron Khavkin. A microbiologist, Waldemar Haffkine found late 1800's Russia to be way too nice for his liking and made his way to plague-ridden India (with a stopover to slum around Paris with Louis Pasteur). Waldemar Mordecai Wolfe Haffkine, born Vladimir Aronovich Havkin, in Odessa, Russia, on March 15, 1860, was the fourth of five surviving children of Rosalie Landsberg and Aaron Havkin, a schoolmaster. The family was Jewish and of modest circumstances. In this regard, the memory of the Mulkowal incident of 1902, when 19 people inoculated with a prophylactic substance developed by Waldemar Haffkine died of tetanus, was still fresh in the people’s minds.
